Signs of Greatness?

Sometimes I sit and wonder when exactly Albert Einstein’s parents knew how smart he was, or when Lance Armstrong’s parents realized how athletic he was, or when my parents found out how gorgeous I was.

Arguably one of the most prolific leaders of the 20th century was Mahatma Gandhi, the pacifist Indian leader who brought his people from a dark and dangerous war into a period of relative peace.  One of his most popular tactics to draw attention to his various causes was going on hunger strikes.
Ryan has been going to daycare for nearly a week and all reports are that he’s behaving well but he doesn’t seem to like to sleep and he’s not eating very much while at school.  When he returns home, he eats like a mouse in a Kraft factory.  So it got me thinking, could our little man actually be protesting his being banished to daycare?  Could he really be that clever? Then I look closer at him and I’m starting to see that he may have more in common with greatness than skinny arms and no hair. I’m hopeful our little protestor will give up his cause and realize there are other ways to make his point.

Kid at Heart

Jenn spent yesterday in Poughkeepsie continuing her gym training by working out all day. So, what did Ryan and I do? Well, we didn’t exercise. Instead, we decided to go out to lunch. We made the trip down to Friendly’s and split a grilled cheese sandwich, mashed potatoes, green beans and french fries. We also split a “Cone head Sundae.” If you’ve never had one then you can’t possibly understand the nostalgia that overwhelmed me. It gave me just a taste of what life will be like as Ryan gets a bit older. He’s really bringing the kid in me out. I’m excitedly anticipating the next trip and the next opportunity to be a kid.

I’m Ready

I spent some time in thought tonight as I prepared for bed. A man can really tell his entire life story by his bedtime routine. Some are type A personalities who check to make sure the house is locked…3 times (dad/steve). Others, roll around and can’t sleep because they are thinking of tomorrow and all they have to do. Yet others pass out right away. Then, there are parents of toddlers. These parents want to pass out but they have too many other things to worry about. Are the bottles made, does the little bambino have clean pants, what is he going to wear tomorrow….is the door locked. Goodnight all…I think.

Pay for pain?

Today marked Jenn’s triumphant return to school and it also marked the first day of daycare for our young monkey. I had the unfortunate task of working from Connecticut today so that gave me plenty of time to think. It’s a terrible feeling to give up control of the one thing you care the most about in life (the other thing, as she’ll tell you, I never had control over) but it’s entirely unfair that we have to pay for it. I can’t think of too many instances where you pay to receive so much pain. Then again, I’m still too young for a colonoscopy. I’ll check back in five years.

Moves Like That II

With every day comes a new reason to love our little man.  Many of you have seen the last video where Ryan shared with the world some of his moves.  Now, with the help of a living legend singing background, Ryan gives you “the head banger.”  As we get ready to send Mommy off to work for the upcoming school year, we’re sure there will be many more new moves to come…just not tonight.

Delicous isn’t Delicious

I received an email from an old friend (“old” used both figuratively and literally) who happens to also be a former boss.  In that email, he mentioned that I had a typo in the title of my blog. Appalling!  How could someone who pays such attention to detail have a spelling error in the title!  Then I realized, spell check doesn’t check the titles.  After further analysis, I realized that “Life’s Messy and Delicous” has a much different meaning than “Life’s Messy and Delicious.”  Dejected and embarrassed, I made the change.  Then I realized, I’m averaging around 100 visits per day to this blog which is both interesting and scary.  Did no one notice this error in the past year I’ve been blogging?  It just goes to show, don’t believe everything you read on the Internet! 🙂

Always Smile

Awesome picture of Ryan with some of his friends.  The first thing I thought of when I saw this picture was how the two young ladies had such cute smiles and my little man wasn’t as quick to smile for some reason. Then I looked deeper and you can see he’s intently focused on something or someone.

This is not an abnormal occurrence for our little man.  A smile from our youngest roommate is a bit of a challenge to get from him but unforgettable once you get it.  He does certainly make you work for your smiles.

It’s a good reminder for us older folk to remember, no matter how focused we are on something, smile because you never know who’s watching.

2 AM

We had a great time in Lake Placid this past weekend but I can tell you, with the same certainty that I have that the Yankees are the greatest baseball team ever, I’m no longer able to stay up until 2am without becoming a very evil person.

It was a great opportunity for Jenn and I to get away but we should’ve spent a bit more time sleeping and a bit less time burning the midnight oil.  We did get a chance to experience mother nature at its most beautiful with a quick hike up Pitch-Off mountain on our way out of town.  If you’ve never been, you need to make some time to do it.  Get some sleep though before you do!

Missing The Little Dude

Jenn and I are spending the weekend in Lake Placid with some of my good friends from college. It’s a great time to have a cold beer, sit back and reminisce about old times and remember a time when life was a lot less stressful. It was nice to remember those times but as I lie alone (Jenn’s actually coming tomorrow with our friend Sarah) I think how much I miss them both. For all the late nights and early morning screaming sessions, I still miss the little dude…a lot.

Mommy and Me

Short and sweet to keep the blog moving forward but I spent some time tonight clearing my digital camera and found an awesome picture of Jenn and Ryan (and his tongue).  Is there anything better than your family at Saratoga? 🙂  I don’t think so.

It’d be nice to get back there.  We’ll see if the little man lets us do it!
