Calm Down America, Have Belly Laugh

I’ve followed the recent Supreme Court hearings on same-sex marriage pretty closely and a lot of the reaction in the news and on Facebook.  Here’s what I can say, definitively.  America needs to relax.  Seriously.  It seems we can’t have a civil discourse anymore between two sides of an argument without everyone totally losing control.

I created this blog nearly four years ago so that I could remember the many accomplishments of my children.  I created it so that I could remember, in the moment, what they were feeling, what I was feeling, what Jenn was like.  I think I also created it so my boys could, one day, look back and see what I like as a person.

I’ll leave you with this on the topic of same-sex marriage.  It’s really simple.  I don’t want my court deciding public policy because my legislature is too afraid to do it.  I don’t want people who follow my religion to claim that they are, in some way, the moral judge. I don’t think we’ve earned that role and I’d prefer to leave it to a higher power.  I don’t see a way that you can legislate out love.  Even if you disagree with same-sex marriage, we should all know that true love can’t be separated.  So really, what we’re talking about if you take morality and constitutional law out of the discussion, is the question of letting same-sex couples take a tax incentive for getting married and enter into a joint contract?  I think, when we boil it down to that, we really just need to calm down, get some perspective and have a big belly laugh.
